Expert in efficiency and selectivity research; fishing gear technology and fuel
saving; measurements of the engineering performance of the fishing gears at sea
using underwater instrumentation; fishing gear design; netting material
properties; modelling and performance; physical and biological impacts produced
in the marine environment by human activities. He is on the scientific committee
of the international conferences on fishing engineering IMAM 2007, IMAM 2011 and
e-Fishing 2010. He has been the responsible scientist in several EU and national
research projects and attended as expert in several STECF and DGFISH Working
Groups and many other international and national committees on fisheries. He has
been working on both commercial and research vessels, and is an expert in the
process of research and development of fishing gears, of which some prototypes
are being used by fishing industry. He is holder of three patents pending. Since
2010 he is member of the EU Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for
Fisheries (STECF). Since 2009 he is President of the National Commission UNITEX
SC140 ”Fishing nets and ropes”, for the standardization of the European textile
sector within the Technical Committee CEN/TC248 “Textiles and textile products”.
Since 2005 he is responsible for the Fishing Technology Unit at CNR. Since 2003
he is Chair of the “Local Italian Chapter of the Eco-Ethics International Union
(EEIU)”. Since 2002 he is an official Member of the ICES/FAO Working Group on
Fishing Technology and Fishing Behaviour (WGFTFB) and since 1999 he is member of
the Italian Society of Marine Biology (SIBM). Since 1994 he has been Chief
Examiner for Professional Fisheries license issued by the Italian Port
Authorities.

He holds a PhD degree in Biology and Marine Ecology on the selectivity and
impact of bottom trawl. His work focuses on fishing technology, fishery
management, selectivity of the fishing gears, impact of fishing gears of the
seabed, bycatch and discard, National and European legislation on fishing gears,
support to National fishery inspector, physical and mechanical properties of
fishing netting materials. In the last 8 years he has been responsible for
training courses to Italian Fishery Inspectors concerning the control procedures
of fishing gears. He has been the responsible scientist in EU and national
research projects. In the last 15 years he has participated in a variety of
national and EC-funded research projects (e.g. : NECESSITY project, NEphrops and
CEtacean Species Selection Information and TechnologY, FP 6th,
SSP8-CT-2003-501605; the DEGREE Project, Development of fishing Gears with
Reduced Effects on the Environment, FP 6th, SSP8-CT-2004-022576; the Sardone
project, Improving assessment and management of small pelagics in the
Mediterranean, FP 6th, 44294). He attended as expert in several STECF and DGFISH
Working Groups and many other international and national committees on
fisheries. He is the author of numerous scientific publications. Currently, he
holds a position of Researcher in the Institute of Marine Sciences of CNR. He
has been working on both commercial and research vessels, and is an expert in
the process of research and development of fishing gears, of which some
prototypes are being used by fishing industry. He is holder of three patents
pending.

He has over 30 years of experience as net-maker. Since the 1980s he collaborates
with the Fishing Technology Unit. He has practical experience in fishing gear design
