STUDY OF THE MAIN FACTORS AFFECTING CODEND SELECTIVITY AND CATCH |
|
|
The FAO Code of Conduct
for Responsible Fisheries and all the recent EU communications and regulations suggest
that States and users of living aquatic resources should conserve aquatic ecosystems.
Moreover States should prevent overfishing and excess fishing capacity and should
implement management measures to ensure that fishing effort is commensurate with
the productive capacity of the fishery resources and their sustainable utilization.
Selective and environmentally safe fishing
gear and practices should be further developed and applied, to the extent practicable,
in order to maintain biodiversity and to conserve the population structure and aquatic
ecosystems and protect fish quality. Research into fish capture
methods must be part of this process to optimise exploitation of the fish stocks and minimise
waste. Fishing Technology Unit (FTU) has undertaken a number of detailed studies
to assess the factors affecting the selectivity of gears used by the Italian demersal
fleet. Studies have been carried out to measure
the effect on the round fish selectivity
cod-ends by:
- Increasing mesh size
- Reducing the thickness of cod-end twines
- Removing lifting bags
- Using double codend to divide the discard from the commercial catch
- Decreasing the number of circumferential meshes and incorporating square mesh
panels
- or sorting grids
Similar selectivity investigations have been conducted on cod-ends used by the Nephrops
fleet, topics covered include:
- Cod-end mesh size and shape
- Twine thickness, square mesh panel position and sorting grids.
