Since 2000 the Italian Coast Guard (Comando Generale del
Corpo delle Capitanerie di Porto - Guardia Costiera) entrusted ISMAR-CNR,
Sezione di Ancona with courses to qualify and update the military acting as
fisheries inspectors. An accurate control performed by qualified staff is
regarded as essential by EC in order to achieve the aims of the Common Fisheries
Policy (CFP). The Fishery Biology Unit has the scientific and logistic
responsibility of these courses, aimed at providing adequate biological and
technological information on fishery and resource management problems, as well
as an update on the National and European legislation in force, towards a
responsible management of fishery resources.

In order to support this field of activity, the Fishery Biology Unit
staff has developed an electronic database concerning Italian (National and
Regional) and European (mainly regarding the Mediterranean region) legislation
on Fisheries, commercialization of fisheries products, resource management and
environmental conservation. This database, and all related documents, are
available on both digital and paper support and are
accessible online.
